New Clients & GP Referrals

New clients and GP referrals

Everything you need before your first appointment: whether you need a referral, how Medicare works, what you will pay, and how to get in touch.

Do I need a referral?

You do not need a referral to see a psychologist at Fleurieu Psychology Services. A referral from your GP, along with a Mental Health Care Plan, is what allows you to claim a Medicare rebate on the cost of your sessions.

Medicare and Mental Health Care Plans

Under the Better Access to Mental Health scheme, clients referred by their GP on a Mental Health Care Plan can access up to ten visits per calendar year, with a maximum of six sessions per GP referral.

Once the sessions on your referral are used, you will need a new referral from your GP before your next appointment if you wish to continue. If a new referral is not in place, the session is not covered by Medicare and will be billed at the usual full or concession fee with no rebate.

The full fee is payable at the end of each session. We can process the rebate electronically so that it is refunded to your bank account, or issue an invoice so you can claim through myGov yourself.

Funding and payment pathways

Medicare

GP referral with a Mental Health Care Plan.

Private clients

No referral needed. Part of the fee may be claimable through private health cover — check with your fund first.

Concession card holders

Clients holding a current Health Care Card or other government concession card are offered a reduced rate.

Paying agencies

Workcover, the Motor Accident Commission, Return to Work SA and similar agencies. Accounts are sent directly to the agency where a claim is approved — please provide your case manager’s name and claim number before your first appointment.

Before your first appointment

1

Ask your GP to send the referral

Your GP can send your referral and Mental Health Care Plan directly to the practice you will be attending.

2

Phone the practice to book

Christies Beach and Goolwa appointments are booked on (08) 8326 4354. Hallett Cove appointments are booked on (08) 7228 5426.

3

Bring your Medicare card

Bring your Medicare card and, if you hold one, your Health Care Card or government concession card so the correct fee can be applied.

Changing or cancelling an appointment

We understand that circumstances change. Please give us as much notice as possible so that we can offer the appointment to another client. A $50 non-attendance fee may be charged where an appointment is missed without 24 hours’ notice, and this fee is the client’s responsibility rather than a paying agency’s.
